We say the challenge is More Than Robots for a good reason! Outreach is a big part of FIRST Tech Challenge UK and it’s something a lot of teams really thrive at. Every way that teams bring their community into the challenge is unique and we love shouting about it!
Team Subnautics may be a new team on the block this year but they’ve already grasped how impactful their outreach efforts can be. Many of them jumped at the chance to become Youth Ambassadors too, sharing what the challenge is about with even more people. With our qualifying tournaments just around the corner, we can’t wait to see what they achieve in their debut year!
We are the Subnautics, an all-female team paving the way for future generations in STEM. Our mission is to build a community of inspiring, problem-solving and supportive individuals who uplift and encourage each other to grow.
Our key outreach advice for teams like yours is simple yet powerful: “Communicate with everyone.” Don’t hesitate to reach out to as many groups, schools and organisations as possible. Building these connections will significantly expand your team’s scale, support network and opportunities.
Team Subnautics with their Team Lead
As a beginner team with limited experience, we discovered that success comes from effort and collaboration. To put this into practice, we held a mini-competition within our team to see how many groups and organisations we could connect with. The results were incredible! By reaching out to nearly 100 groups and organisations, we demonstrated our dedication, teamwork and positive attitude toward both the competition and our mission as a team.
Our team is based in Marylebone, as we belong to the St Marylebone School for Girls. As a team, we are proud to be part of our school and bring its values within everything that we do. Our group is composed of different categories – leadership, outreach, building, design, coding and social media. We come together as a whole to compete at our highest level. Our team started in September – meaning that we are extremely new to the game. However, this provides our team with fresh perspectives ready and eager to participate to the best of our abilities.
Our team aims to excel in outreach, we have talked to many primary schools and arranged workshops for children related to STEM. We also have arranged workshops with several primary schools and are very active on our social media channels. We plan to meet with other teams and reach out to more schools, while also balancing our building and admin for the robot.
But wait. There’s more! We are also super excited to announce a very close-to-home long-term outreach project. We are currently working on a video about the team and the wonderful personal journeys that each member has followed. The video will show the world what we are all about as Subnautics from our perspective, from struggles to what makes us different from others. We can’t wait to share it with you all soon and spread the word about it.
In the future, we plan to continue communicating with schools, teams and sponsors in order to achieve a wide network in which we can help, educate and learn from. We hope to inspire other teams with our positive attributes and bright minds. Every single one of the sharp minds on our team contributes so much to our mission.
Stay tuned and see you at regionals!
